Book Reviews

Here I'll review and write my thoughts on books I've read/currently reading.

The Children of Men by P.D. James

12.14.2023

Finished this book a few days ago, and I can honestly say that it was different to what I was expecting. I thought it was gonna be like a slow burn, action type of thing where everyone is desperately trying to conceive a child, but it wasn't. It instead covers the deteoriation of society with the aging population and that no new children have been born since 1995.

The first half of the book was slow paced; it wasn't boring, but it didn't catch my attention a lot of the time. It basically sets up the stage for what's to come. The second half however, makes up for it as a LOT of shit happens real quick. Overall the writing style was detailed, but easy to understand, and I eat that up. An easy read but you have to wait for the fun stuff to happen.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (SPOILER WARNING)

10.12.2023:

I finished this book today. It's a very short read, but I liked it. Basically this guy called Gregor Samsa works as a salesman. Very normal life, until one day, he wakes up as a "disgusting vermin". Yeah he turns into a bug. One problem, he's late for work. So he tries to get himself out of bed, but can't because he's adjusting to his new species. His manager comes to his family home to demand him come out, and when he's finally able to, everyone pisses themselves. He spends the next few months in solitude in his room, as he can't talk to anyone and no one talks to him (except the maid, but she's annoying). He then dies randomly and his family doesn't give a shit. They're like: "Thank god that he's finally dead". Like um that's your son? Brother? Yeah, he's a roach but don't you think they would feel a little sad at the fact that he'll never have a chance to become human again? This makes me think that personally they didn't care much about him in the first place.

I want to read more Kafka. I've been thinking of reading In The Penal Colony next, but since it's not in my local library, I'll have to do an interlibrary loan or buy it for cheap. I want to read it cause I've heard that the Joy Division song "Colony" was inspired by this story. And I really like that song. A lot.

Artemis by Andy Weir

10.10.2023:

I finished this book yesterday, October 9, 2023, and I liked it. It was a generally funny and enjoyable experience. I often found myself not wanting to put it down and actually looking forward to reading it (which is a good sign for me). A problem though: the main character, Jazz, doesn't really have any character development. Her character is basically just someone who makes bad decisions and is an asshole to everyone. Even at the end of the book, she's still a little selfish and unlikable. I still enjoyed the book though. I liked his book The Martian a little more though. Should I read Project Hail Mary?
