I finished this book today. It's a very short read, but I liked it. Basically this guy called Gregor Samsa works as a salesman. Very normal life, until one day, he wakes up as a "disgusting vermin". Yeah he turns into a bug. One problem, he's late for work. So he tries to get himself out of bed, but can't because he's adjusting to his new species. His manager comes to his family home to demand him come out, and when he's finally able to, everyone pisses themselves. He spends the next few months in solitude in his room, as he can't talk to anyone and no one talks to him (except the maid, but she's annoying). He then dies randomly and his family doesn't give a shit. They're like: "Thank god that he's finally dead". Like um that's your son? Brother? Yeah, he's a roach but don't you think they would feel a little sad at the fact that he'll never have a chance to become human again? This makes me think that personally they didn't care much about him in the first place.
I want to read more Kafka. I've been thinking of reading In The Penal Colony next, but since it's not in my local library, I'll have to do an interlibrary loan or buy it for cheap. I want to read it cause I've heard that the Joy Division song "Colony" was inspired by this story. And I really like that song. A lot.
